PRESIDENT

COLLEGE of ORL-HNS, AMM and MSOHNS 2024/2025

Message From THE PRESIDENT 2024 - 2025

Dear members and fellows,

I would like to take this opportunity to thank members and fellows of the college for giving me the opportunity to be President of College of ORL for this term, 2024-2025. This is my second opportunity to lead our association, which was then called the Malaysian Society of Otorhinolaryngologists - Head and Neck Surgeons. While the society still exist for a particular purpose, I would like to request members to use the College of Otorinolaryngologists – Head and Neck Surgeons (CORLAMM) as the platform of our association and our communication internally and externally. It was the unanimous decision of our members at AGM to form our college. We all realize the importance of academia in the practice of otolaryngology, head and neck surgery. After having attended a number of meetings and seminars organized by Academy of Medicine (AMM), I can really feel the comradery amongst the various colleges and overwhelming support from AMM towards activities of our college. On 20 August 2024, a number of our colleagues were admitted as members and Dr Harvinder as fellow of AMM. Congratulations to all new members and fellow!

As we move forward in our practice of the specialty, we are entering a new era of disruptive medicine. Artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, molecular medicine and genetics and many more advanced technologies are already affecting the practice of medicine. As otorhinolaryngologists and head and neck surgeons, we have no choice but to embrace these technologies in our practice. There will also be a need to reinvent the training programmes of our future otorhinolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons. Research, which is an important pillar that can help provide solutions to future challenges that we continue to face, has to be done by all. It is hoped that CORLAMM will be the platform for all otorhinolaryngologists, head and neck surgeons of Malaysia to come together to chart the future of our clinical practice, education and research. The recently approved (Parliament, July 2024) and implementation of the amended Medical Act 1971 (Act 50) will foster more streamlined and effective specialist training, currently undertaken in the universities and Ministry of Health. But the amendments also provide a window of opportunity for CORLAMM to have an enhanced and major role in ORL specialist training. We must therefore take this opportunity.

Thank you.
